While Grand prix races occurred across all the Europe, Le Mans was pondered as a peculiar test for motor racing. Manufacture of not the fastest but reliable cars should become the purpose of manufacturers. Besides such test promoted development of fuel-efficient technologies. Usually the race consists of 50 participants. In each bolide there should be not less than two places though this possibility isn't used during the last years. Presence of no more than two doors is supposed; doors are not required for open bolides. Race passes simultaneously in all classes. Results of race are defined both in absolute offset and in each class separately. Though 24 hours of Le Mans were the part of World Sportscar Championship, the marathon had the rules different from the rules used in other cases, partly because of length of a route. Some rules differed because of safety reasons, others because of taking into account the features of competition. Within many decades the crew has been obliged to pass not less than an hour racing before they were allowed to refuel the car with technical liquids except for fuel. It was ACO’s attempt to raise efficiency and reliability. Cars which couldn't hold out the first hour without refueling of liquids were disqualified Another rule which for a long period of time was unique for Le Mans is the requirement of an engine stoppage before refueling in lock-up garages. This requirement is based not only on the reasons of fire safety, but also promotes the increase of reliability of the car as thus the ability of time after time repeatedly start an engine during race is checked. Other element of this rule is that mechanics are not allowed to influence a car or to replace the complete set of tyres while there is a fuelling. It promotes acceleration of long pit stops since commands are compelled to search for faster ways of carrying out of the given procedure. As an exception to this rule, drivers are allowed to leave the car and to be replaced during refueling. In Le Mans there are the various traditions established for the passed years. One of the oldest is waving the French tricoloured flag as a signal to the beginning of the race. Usually it is accompanied by air show of the jet planes bearing red, white and dark blue smoke. The similar tradition is concerning other flags — waving flags of safety during final laps of race by marshals as a congratulation of winners and others finishing. Exactly at 24 hours race of Le Mans was laid the foundation of such a tradition as a champagne shower. In 1967 in 24 hours of Le-Mans Dan Gerni and A. J. Foyt have won the race at the wheel of new Ford GT40. When staying at the podium Gerni has received a bottle of champagne he has seen beneath the Ford chief manager Henry Ford II, the owner of the team Carroll Shelby and their wives, and also several journalists who have predicted earlier a failure for a high quality duet. Gerni has stirred up a bottle and has poured over all nearby having established thus a tradition which has been reproduced all over the world for more than 40 years already.
